This Weeks' Topic
Casino Cheating

This week's topic is casino cheating.  Texas Hold 'em and blackjack have become very popular in recent years.  Exactly how big an industry are casinos in this country?

  • The casino industry is growing in this country.
    • Taking in over $30 billion a year.

What if you  are on a winning streak,  and haven't broken any laws, and you are not cheating… can a casino ask you to leave or ban you from the casino ?

A casino is a private business, and they have a right to throw you out or even ban you from coming back.

What are some common forms of  casino cheating?

Some examples include:

  • Past posting - Making a small bet,  and if the cards look good, then adding chips to your bet.
  • Collusion - Working together with a casino employee to rig a game
  • A player works with the dealer with the dealer signaling his hand to the player, so that the player has a larger payout.

Is cheating a casino a crime in Missouri?

It is a Class D felony.

Is it a crime to count cards?

  • Obviously casinos discourage it, but card counting is not a crime.
  • However, if you use some type of device to help count cards, then it is a felony.

Casinos obviously have surveillance cameras, but are there any new high tech changes in the future for the industry?

Currently the industry is working on a new type of chip that can send radio signals to a nearby computer.

The computers will then be able to track how many chips are bet on each hand, and the casino can track who has chips or if the chips leave the casino.

Operating a casino is big business, and eventually cheaters get caught.
